A frigate like U.S.S. Coronado is a small ship, not much larger than an Intrepid or
Artemis class destroyer. As such, her officer core and crew complement is somewhat compressed
relative to Starfleet's larger vessels. In addition, the Katana class like many frigates is
built for the convenience of the ship's systems rather than the crew; many systems are automated.
These factors give Coro a total crew complement of 215 Starfleet personnel, plus her two
Companies of Starfleet Marine Corps and Marine officers, for a total of 489 aboard. Because of
this, the ship's Science, Flight Ops, and Maintenance departments are subsets of larger departments
aboard, instead of separate sections. Frigates also only rarely carry Counsellor-staff
personnel -- such (if aboard at all) are usually part of the Medical staff.
From the files below, you can review the officer core of U.S.S. Coronado:
- Group:
U.S.S. Coronado is the command and control ship of Defenders Task Group 85.3, "Whitestone."
As such, the group's command Admiral and his staff are embarked, directing the actions of other
Task Group ships from Coro's Command Information Center (CIC);
- Command:
The Command staff includes the Commanding and Executive Officers, and Coronado's Chief of
Operations. The Operations Managers and the Flight Controllers report to the Chief of Ops. If
officers from other ships or assignments are visiting Coronado, they will usually be
temporarily attached to the Command staff;
- Marines:
The Marine Assault Team is an important aspect of Starfleet frigate operations. Frigates are one
of only two types of ships in the fleet designated as full-time Marine carriers. The Marine
Commandant aboard a frigate is usually third in command of the ship;
- Tactical:
The internal and external defense of the starship is the responsibility of the Tactical department.
This includes the Bridge Tactical Officers, responsible for the ship's outer defenses, and the
Security Officers, responsible for the ship's internal defense;
- Engineering:
This important department is the responsibility of the Chief Engineer. This department is
responsible for the overall "health" of U.S.S. Coronado's key systems, notably the quantum
slipstream drive, warp and impulse engines, the fusion reactors and batteries, and the
electro-plasma power distribution net;
- Medical:
The ship's Medical staff is obviously very important: the well-being of the crew are these officer's
domains. Coro also carries a small but critical Science staff. Frigates, as smaller
starships, must sometimes combine operations and facilities, and as a result, Coronado's
Medical and Science staffs operate in close cooperation...
By selecting one of the departments at the top of your PADD, you can access more detailed
information about that particular department, as well as the officers that are part of that
department aboard U.S.S. Coronado.
