The internal and external defense of U.S.S. Coronado is clearly a very important job, and falls under the jurisdiction of the ship's Tactical department. Some might be confused about the division of responsibility between a frigate's Marine contingent and its Tactical department, but the lines of responsibility are clear: the Marines are an offensive force, Tactical is responsible for ship's defense. Defense in this context entails both the defense of the ship from Threat forces or hostile conditions in the deep space environment, or the protection of the ship's company and crew from boarders or other conditions that might cause physical harm to those aboard.

On the Bridge, the Tactical officer is responsible for the overall defense of the ship, but primarily the implementation of the ship's shields and weaponry. He or she also directs the overall action of the other Tactical officers if the ship is boarded by hostile forces. The other Tactical officers, meanwhile, are responsible for leading Security teams to deal with these borders, and secure important areas of the ship from interference. During a diplomatic mission, it is the responsibility of the Tactical department to serve as "escorts" for any guests aboard the ship, both to ensure that they do not wander into areas they shouldn't, and to protect them from possible harm.

Tactical officers are also often called upon to defend Away teams during missions, and take a fierce pride from knowing they stand between the dangers of an unknown planet and the Starfleet officers that are studying it. Clearly then, the Tactical staff has a dangerous job, but these men and women are well suited to handle it!

Derek Canterbury
Post:Chief Tactical Officer
U.S.S. Coronado, NCC-97901
Species:Human Male
Birthplace:London, England, Earth
Age:27

Physical Characteristics:
Height/Weight:186 centimetres / 102 kilograms
Hair/Eyes:Black / Dark Brown
Description:Derek Canterbury would best be described as massive; though he is taller than average, the truly imposing aspect is his sheer muscular bulk. With less than 8.7% body fat, Derek Canterbury was offered a position in the Starfleet Marine Corps, but, after giving the position some thought, he denied it for undisclosed reasons. His facial features are sharp and swept, with minor Asian influences, though his English-European ancestry is dominant. Most notable are his deep dark brown eyes, which often appear to be dilated more than they actually are, much to the chagrin of medical staff performing physical examinations upon him. He prefers to maintain a very short "military buzz" haircut, though he allows the hair towards the back of his head to grow progressively thicker towards the base of his skull, mainly as an affectation. From time to time he adopts a different hair style.
Notes:Canterbury was involved in a training accident while performing flight operations within Starfleet Academy. A nearby cadet collided with his training shuttle, overloading the shields and sending Canterbury's shuttle drifting at high impulse, rotating out of control on three axes. By remote, the supervisor re-enabled the craft's engines and managed to stabilise the shuttle. When Canterbury was recovered from the mauled remains, it was discovered that one of his kidneys had been ruined by a piece of debris that had been projected when his console exploded. Though an artificial kidney has been integrated into his digestive system, he has next to no tolerance for alcohol, and has -- on more than one occasion -- suffered mild poisoning from some foreign dishes. This is only aggravated by his love of non-human cuisine -- especially Klingon foods.

Personality Characteristics:
Marital Status:Engaged to Ens. Joanna Penelope Renchester, Assistant Medical Officer, U.S.S. Highwater (before M64 incident)
Family:Father: Michael Christian Canterbury; Mother: Alicia Judith Canterbury; Sister: Lieutenant (J.G.) Jeanne Alicia Canterbury, Assistant Engineer, U.S.S. Dauntless
Dominants:Direct, opinionated, adversarial
Notes:Well-known for his wild and blunt personality, his attitude has entered him into a wide variety of confrontations with fellow officers, and even civilians, which could have been avoided had he handled the situation a little more diplomatically. This is mainly caused as a result of his keen intellect and sharp senses, which he tries to use to the fullest of his abilities. This has, unfortunately, given him the tendency to contest orders he doesn't agree with, and to defend his position with open or thinly-veiled verbal hostility, even to those of a superior rank. He has been recommended and denied for a promotion over three times -- though he is definitely hard to be agreeable with, those who have worked with him do consider him to be quite talented (though most are hesitant to share that information in his presence). After being stranded in the M64 galaxy, Derek Canterbury has become somewhat withdrawn and a little more irritable than usual.

Canterbury is very reluctant to kill any sentient lifeform, regardless of its intentions. He will always attempt to subdue -- rather than kill -- any opponent he is forced to fight, and any attempts to convince him otherwise will be met with hostility.

Interests:Canterbury spends a good portion of his off-hours relaxing in a holodeck simulation of a lighthouse on the Welsh coast of England. Occasionally, he is seen engaging in personal combat training simulations. When not in the holodeck, he enjoys reading the works of Shakespeare in paper form as well as experimenting with a food replicator.

Personal History
Early Childhood:On Stardate 237609.27, Derek Michael Canterbury was a healthy -- though slightly underweight -- child born to his parents, Michael Christian Canterbury and Alicia Judith Canterbury (née Carrington) in London, England on the planet Earth. His birth followed that of his sister by two years, though his parents favored neither child and were caring and considerate towards both.

Throughout much of Derek Canterbury's childhood, he was smaller than his peers. Fortunately, he was shielded by his older sister from being teased; as a result, he and his sister formed very strong sibling bonds, and they were friends as well as family members. They would, of course, experience the occasional spat as siblings are wont to do, but in the end, it only reinforced their family ties.

Youth:Michael Canterbury had been grooming his son to become an architect, to take after his own profession; Derek's small size had essentially precluded him from most forms of sports and other laborious occupations, so his father sought to bring him into the family business, which was rather profitable.

Surprisingly, however, Derek Canterbury began to grow very rapidly upon reaching puberty, and feeling a renewed sense of self-confidence, he began to enter into various extra-curricular sports, and even developed an appreciable sense of humor.

Teenage Life:Not all of Canterbury's life was entirely model, however. After continually growing and eventually outsizing his peers, Canterbury began to develop an ego. He started to fall into the wrong crowd, associating with other teenagers who were far less scrupulous than him. He grew apart from his parents and family.

After spending some time as a bully, Canterbury finally had a moral breakthrough and realized that ostracizing others because of their differences was wrong. As he was always quite direct and confrontational, he brought this up with his peers. Worse came to very worse as he inadvertently offended one of the teenagers and was attacked with a knife. He managed to knock his attacker unconscious with a well-placed fist, but not before suffering a deep but non-debilitating flesh wound to his upper right arm. The remainder of the group fled, and Canterbury trudged home in pain and misery. He declined to press charges. The whole situation left him with mixed emotions of anger and helplessness -- he vowed to take steps to ensure that he would never allow the voice of his conscience to go unheard again, and to help those who could not voice their own.

His sister and parents commended him on his change of heart, and welcomed him back into the fold as if nothing had transpired but a bad dream. Canterbury has forever felt indebted to their forgiveness.

Late Teens:When Canterbury reached sixteen years of age, his sister had joined Starfleet Academy as an Engineer. Because they were almost always close, Canterbury decided that he too would join Starfleet. His father encouraged him to join as an Engineer, as his apprenticeship with architecture could prove useful, but Canterbury had a different goal in mind.

Two years later, on Stardate 239206.28, Canterbury bade a tearful farewell to his father and mother in England, and boarded a shuttle to San Francisco to enlist.

Starfleet Academy:
Year One:With the commencement of the semester on Stardate 239209.01, Derek Canterbury enrolled in the basic Starfleet training. With the exception of a few of his teenage years, Derek Canterbury had always been a capable learner, and his first year of basic training was tackled and overcome with reasonable success.

Year Two:Canterbury continued his basic training, reaching into the 85th percentile of his class. He gained special credits in his shuttlecraft piloting course, though on Stardate 239402.23, he was involved in a shuttle accident with another cadet. He required a replacement kidney; the other cadet was killed almost instantly. Though Canterbury was excused from class temporarily to mourn and recover, he returned quickly and did not seem to be adversely affected by the incident.

Year Three:Having opted to take the Security course as a major and the Communications course as a minor, Derek Canterbury entered into the courses and impressed many of his peers. Though he was lacking in a few areas -- most notably, starship weapons operation -- he seemed to be performing quite capably. On Stardate 239410.12, Canterbury met Cdt. Joanna Penelope Renchester in a café in San Francisco. Though they fell deeply in love, neither of the two young trainees allowed their relationship to interfere with their careers, and their progress in Starfleet Academy was almost entirely unhindered.

Year Four:In his final year at Starfleet Academy, Derek Canterbury impressed his peers and teachers alike with his great technique in Anbo-Jytsu. In holographic simulations, Derek Canterbury was matched against a Klingon, a Vulcan, and even a Nausicaan, and in almost all cases succeeded in defeating his foe. Unfortunately, when a simulation resulted in a boarding attack against the simulated vessel, Derek Canterbury did not set his phaser to kill, and as a result failed a competency test in that area. He insisted that he was doing so out of conscious choice, not out of lack of knowledge of proper procedure. When all was said and done, Canterbury graduated from Starfleet Academy in the 87th percentile of his class (though he was only in the 60th percentile when it came to bridge operations) on Stardate 239606.01. It was speculated by some that he would be the top of his class if he didn't have such a volatile attitude and stubborn demeanor.

Proficiencies
Combat Skills:Not surprisingly, Derek Canterbury is quite effective in unarmed combat, especially if done to subdue rather than kill. He also possesses impressive marksmanship with Type III and Type IV phasers. He is somewhat deficient in the use of Type I and II hand phasers, and is rather inexperienced at the use of ship weapons systems.
Knowledge Skills:Derek Canterbury retains knowledge of architecture, and by extension a working familiarity with structural engineering. He is also an excellent shuttlecraft pilot, though he generally pays little attention to his sides and aft, preferring to focus on obstacles in front.
Manual Skills:Having been in regular communication with his sister (Lt.(J.G.) Jeanne Alicia Canterbury) until the U.S.S. Athena was lost in the M64 galaxy, Canterbury has obtained a working knowledge of very basic repairs to most forms of ship systems. He is also extremely proficient at modifying or otherwise jury-rigging phasers and other beam weapons.
